About Me

I am a 30-something web developer living in Orem, Utah. I currently work for a company called Oozle Media doing front end web development. I take our designer’s PSDs and turn them into fully functioning websites. I also do maintenance, updates, and changes to existing websites. I use HTML, CSS3, JavaScript and the JQuery library, and PHP to make this all happen. I basically learned PHP in about a two week period several years ago on a dare. (I won.) HTML is something that I’ve worked with since I was a kid and decided to build a Beatles fan page using Netscape Navigator’s built-in HTML editor. Nowadays I use Photoshop and Dreamweaver in conjunction with Filezilla to build and upload sites.

By the way, for the record… see this site all around here right now? I didn’t build it. I used a template. I am not a designer and I didn’t have a design for my site. So I used a theme, so I could focus on portfolio content.

Oozle has chosen to build websites in WordPress because it gives us a lot more flexibility in terms of the components of the design than a standard HTML-based site would. For example, the template system in WordPress means I only have to make changes to the header or footer once to show up across the entire site, while still allowing me the ability to make custom sub pages. I can use a huge variety of plugins, which makes my life a lot easier. Using a contact form plugin is just much faster and more efficient than having to hard code new contact forms every time we build a new website. I’ve heard many arguments against using WordPress to build entire websites. The main argument is that it’s “semantically incorrect” since it’s meant as a blog, not a CMS. Well, this may have been true about two years ago, but WordPress has quite deliberately gone in the direction of a very flexible, simple and efficient CMS. Compared to Joomla and Drupal, which are pretty much nightmarish to develop in, WordPress is amazing.

In addition to being a web developer, which has been my dream job since I was 16, I am the mother of three kids. I love them and I feel fortunate to work at a job that I enjoy, so when I come home at night, I’m cheerful and have the energy to spend time with my kids. But as much as I love them, I have to get out of the house and do things to be happy. Having a job where I build websites all day does that for me.

I also enjoy crocheting, sewing, singing karaoke, and pretty much anything involving the Internet and computers. I have a few high level characters on World of Warcraft that, while obviously note-worthy, I don’t tend to brag about. I don’t use reddit. My favorite meme right now is ermahgerd. My home smells of rich mahogany and leather-bound books and probably whatever my youngest son spilled in the carpet that day. I thought the Lost finale was satisfying. Sometimes I paint my fingernails, but only the ones on my left hand since I’m right-handed.
